The Practicing German Grammar Workbook is the companion workbook to Hammer’s German Grammar and Usage. Every exercise has a cross-reference to the appropriate section in Hammer’s.
It’s not for beginners and isn’t a standard set of exercises like German Grammar Drills. Some exercises are projects. They are tough and take time, but for serious German students, they are invaluable. Here’s an example:
13 The genitive and the dative (See Hammer 2.3 and 2.5)
PROJECT: Take a passage of 1000 words from a modern novel.
- List all the occurrences of either (a) the genitive or (b) the dative, not forgetting to count all the pronouns as well as the nouns.
- Which of the uses given in Hammer (2.3 or 2.5) are the most frequent?
- Which ones did you fail to find? Can you think of a reason why this was so?
Don’t let the horrible cover put you off.
